EL34B'south: TAD vs. Tungsol

I think it really depends on how you're using the amp as to the effect of the ability tubes. If y'all run clean preamps, with a lower wattage power amp cranked, the graphic symbol of the power tubes is everything. How it compresses, the distributions of frequency, how it overdrives, etc.

If yous're running lots of preamp gain into a high wattage power amp that barely gets into the compression region, and never begins to clip, so you won't see a lot of different, except for maybe the tonal spectrum may change a little.

I've read JJ are the goods after Mullards.

Thank you Austone. The EL34B'south specifically are said to be a cross over tube betwixt a 6L6 tone, and an EL34 tone.

As are Kt77'due south and 6CA7'due south.

Correct at present I'm leaning toward kt77's, considering the reviews are much more positive, and the 6CA7 gets expert reviews as well, but my amp is already very lowmid & bass heavy, and reading between the lines, the 6CA7s are pretty girthy.

I had JJ E34Ls in my old Fuchs modded Traynor and they were the perfect blend of 6L6 and EL34 goodness. On the clean channel they sounded like 6L6GCs and on the OD channel like EL34s. As others take suggested, yous really need to give these a endeavor.

If you want 6L6GC type sound from a EL34 tube i would recommend the EH 6CA7 or the JJ 6CA7. These are big bottle axle tetrodes instead of the skinnier EL34 pentode with a G3 surpressor grid.
They bias more than similar to a EL34 tube than a 6l6GC tube. There transconductance are similar (~9.v-10 mA/5 vs 10.v-xi.v mA/5)

The two tube types are vastly different in construction....

The beam tetrode has less third harmonic distortion than the pentodes (EL84 or EL34), and when grid biased at 50-threescore% idle dissipation the beam tubes tend to audio fuller and richer at lower volumes.. In my stance the pentodes really excel when played loud when they start to break upward in a filigree biased push button pull amp.
For a clean audio i find that they audio richer and fatter with lower voltages and more current.
My experience with the TAD EL34B-STR is that they sound similar EL34 and not 6l6GC. They are fairly aggressive and sounds best when run through a closed 2x12 or 4x12 to give them more lesser.. My next move is to effort a pair of JJ 6CA7 in my 1x12 open back philharmonic to give it a slightly more beam tube audio at medium volumes..

Ane small annotate is that the EL34'due south G3 surpressor grid can be connected to a negative voltage to assist the tube conduct more linear simply almost guitar amps tie this G3 pin to ground,. Some hifi amps and earlier traynor amps did use a negative voltage on G3.

If you amp is wired like those early on EL34 Traynor amps do non put in a 6l6GC tube or the new 6CA7 tubes...

If you are looking for a adept country or dejection tone from an EL-34 amp, with some nice balanced depression-med gain crunch, get ahead and endeavor the Tung Sols. I ran Ruby EL34B-STR's besides as Winged =C= before trying the the Tung Sols. I like the Tung Sols the best for what I do. Which is blues, hard stone, archetype stone, some metal and country. I do all of this with a Marshall. It all varies from player to player, rig to rig, amp to amp, guitar to guitar, etc. Don't disqualify a brand of tubes because i person out of thousands received a dud either. Gild your tubes from a respected dealer, and they'll replace them. Finding power tubes that piece of work for you, is kind of like trying new foods that don't wait flavory.
